Hey Pilgrims!
Mike here with another Steel Horizons update! With great pleasure, we are proud to debut the first official art for Steel Horizons, the Mercenary!
Created by the wonderfully talented Jacob Hunnicutt (@jacobhunni on Twitter and Instagram), the Mercenary is one of the first playable classes within the Steel Horizons system.
What does the Mercenary Do?
The Mercenary is a class that specializes in attack power first and foremost. Representing player archetypes from lone wanderers to grizzled war heroes, the Mercenary can be tailored to any type of character build a player can imagine. With two career paths, the Mercenary can be further customized for two different types of play.
The Vanguard
The Vanguard represents the style of play where a character would be up in the front lines of the battle keeping all the enemies focused on them. Skilled in both powering through wounds and damage that would fell and ordinary person, Vanguards are able to take an incredible amount of punishment and continue the fight. Able to attack recklessly and throw their body in front of attackers, the Vanguard not only can deal vast amounts of damage, but also interpose themselves between their allies to take the hits for them.
The Heavy
Wielding weapons of incredible firepower, the Heavy is a dangerous foe or a powerful ally. Skilled in operating weapons infused with the rare Pyric energy, the Heavy’s weapons can decimate all but the most heavily armored foes. Mostly more comfortable with fighting at range with their massive weapons, the Heavy can rain down supporting firepower to hold enemies in place and create opportunities for their allies to move in for the kill!
What’s the rule system?
In recent updates both here on our website as well as on our Patreon, the last news for Steel Horizons was that we had decided to scrap the original plan of using the 5th Edition rules for Dungeons & Dragons and were searching for a new rule set to better fit the themes of what Steel Horizons was built for. Thankfully, after some searching and research, we have decided on the Genesys system from Fantasy Flight Games!
Based around a more narrative and collaborative system, the main advantage of this system is that when making skill rolls, the player rolls a number of dice equal to their skill level (d8s or d10s depending on whether or not they are trained in that skill) and then roll a number of dice equal to the difficulty level of the certain task (again d8s or d10s depending on any circumstances around the task).
We will very soon have a livestream showing off this system in one of my other favorite TTRPGs, the FFG Star Wars RPG, so stay tuned!
We hope you enjoyed this latest update and be sure to stay tuned to our social media sites as we continue to roll out updates on Steel Horizons in the future!
As always, keep wandering!
